Google Play: Android Market Receives Catchier Name and Better Integration

by Holly Shoemaker

While Apple’s new iPad garnered much attention this week, Google made an important announcement too. On Wednesday, Google introduced Google Play, a one-stop destination for books, movies, games, music and apps. Google Play replaces what we know as the Android Market.

Overview of Features

Users have the ability to:

  • store up to 20,000 songs for free and purchase new songs.
  • access approximately 450,000 Android apps and games.
  • browse and purchase e-books.
  • rent streaming movies.

Benefits for the Android Market and Developers

Google Play helps address some of the fragmentation concerns of the Android Market. By housing Google Music, Google Books and the Android Market in one place, existing Android consumers, and potential new ones, have a more streamlined approach. Users may also access Google Play from any tablet, smartphone, e-reader or PC. Google has also said that it will migrate previously downloaded content, which will be store on Google’s cloud.

Users will have an easier time finding and downloading mobile apps. This approach could mean bigger profits for app developers as Google Play increases the visibility of apps. That will help increase app sales for developers.

Concluding Thoughts

This move should bode well for Google as Google Play provides a direct competitor to Apple’s iTunes and Amazon. In addition, people dissatisfied with the changes Netflix made have another option to rent movies. Overall, the layout is clean and users will easily find their books, apps, movies, music and games.
