New iPad Hits Shelves: Even Wonsniak Waits in Line

by Holly Shoemaker

Apple’s new iPad went on sale Friday, March 16, 2012. As expected, the debate continues on whether the new iPad is truly revolutionary.

That debate does not surprise me. Apple fans love Apple products and Android fans will defend what is now Google Play. What strikes me is the lengths people go to get their hands on a new device. I said on Black Friday that I do not wait in lines or go to stores at ridiculous times. The same holds true here. Yes, the Apple Store also sells an experience, and for Apple loyalists, waiting in line seems to be part of an experience. Even Steve Wosniak, Apple’s co-founder, stood in line to purchase the new iPad. When asked why, he said it was a tradition with him.

In addition to launching in the United State, the new iPad was available to consumers in the following countries: Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It should come as no surprise that the new iPad was not available in China.

Concluding Thoughts

While it is too soon to tell if Apple will meet the numbers made by analysts, crowds indicate the new iPad will sell well. Apple stores and outlets like Verizon opened early to meet the demand. I will continue to remain skeptical about people camping out overnight and waiting in long lines just for a new tablet, especially toward those who admitted they did not necessarily know about the product they planned to buy. I will also look for the words “pre-sale” online.
