Tablet Wars Continue: Sony and BlackBerry Reduce Prices

by Holly Shoemaker

Research In Motion (RIM), the company that manufactures BlackBerry, has dropped the price for all of its PlayBooks to $299. RIM cutting its prices does not come as a surprise as the company failed to meet its fourth quarter predictions. The company overestimated the demand for its PlayBook in the United States. RIM is also expected to release a software update in February. The update is expected to include e-mail, but not BlackBerry Messenger.

Sony has dropped the price of its Tablet S by $100. Consumers may now purchase the 16GB model for $400 and the 32GB one for $500. These price reductions came after Sony had previously instituted a $50 cut on December 15, 2011.

Concluding Thoughts

RIM and Sony need to move inventory to make room for new products and to compete with an oversaturation of tablets available, especially lower-end ones. These drops could signal a trend that more Android tablet manufactures will lower their prices too. The increase in options should help the Android Market gain even more users. Price reductions should also help Google see an increase in downloads for mobile apps.
