Alec Baldwin App Story Helps App Developer: Is There No Such Thing as Bad Press?

by Holly Shoemaker

Alec Baldwin is getting a lot of press for not turning off his cell phone to play an app game. All of the stories I read and reports on the TV make me think the following:

  • Is someone really that addicted to an app that they would leave his/her seat, go into the bathroom and slam the door to continue playing it? That is the part of the stance American Airlines takes.
  • It is likely that his ego got in the way and he was rude to the crew. Everyone gets cranky with delayed flights, but Alec Baldwin has a notorious reputation for his temper.
  • Did he really think they were not taking off? I cannot say I really believe this one. However, as people say, “there is no such thing as bad press,” which ties into the ego comment.

In this situation, we can conclude many things. I have tried to send a text at the last minute because passengers were rushed to board a delayed flight. I wanted to inform someone I was about to take off. Sometimes when you board late, the flight crew quickly makes up for time.

Concluding Thoughts

Alec Baldwin’s story generates press for him, the app developer and the app. From a development standpoint, it may seem flattering to know someone got kicked off a flight because of the app you developed. The publicity also helped the company gain more users. Technology in general opens up forms of addiction. With apps being more popular than ever, that could certainly become a possibility.
