Gingerbread Key For Android Phone Life

by Holly Shoemaker

In a previous blog, http://myuniversalapps.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html, I discussed issues regarding battery life for certain smartphones. Last week I blogged about changing carriers over the Black Friday weekend. During that experience, I also made an observation regarding the myTouch 4G, a phone that a sales associate admittedly said does not perform well.

On average, the myTouch 4G should provide up to five hours of battery time. However, many users are lucky to receive two. I often wonder why carriers still sell phones that do not meet the expectations of users or why they do not automatically install the newest Android system on phones like the myTouch 4G.

That does not mean myTouch owners do not have options – even if you received a myTouch 4G as a replacement to the first-generation Google phone. If you own a myTouch 4G and continue to have problems, you have two main options to improve the phone’s performance:

  • Find a T-Mobile location that will install Gingerbread or download the latest Android operating system yourself. The sales associate did not even mention doing this without finding a location that could.
  • Trade the myTouch 4G in for the Sidekick. For experienced smartphone users, they will likely find the interface unappealing and the phone a bit awkward in general.

Concluding Thoughts

At this time, owners cannot update to the newer myTouch 4G. You may find that downloading Gingerbread resolves the battery life issue. You could also opt for the Sidekick. However, if you like the look of the MyTouch 4G try the upgrade first. You will still need to charge your phone at least once a day, but you will now receive over two hours of battery life.
