Android Smartphone Market Grows Thanks to Samsung

by Holly Shoemaker

A new report from IDC shows that Google continues to gain ground over Apple. Samsung gets the credit for that.

Numbers at a Glance
  • The Android Market held 68 percent of the global smartphone market share in Q2 2012. In comparison, Apple had 17 percent.
  • Overall, about 105 million Android smartphones were shipped in Q2 2012. This was an increase of over 50 percent from the same time last year.
  • Apple also showed growth as the company shipped 26 million phones. While this showed an increase of 28 percent from the previous year, the shipment fell short of analyst’s expectations.
Samsung Dominates Android Market

Samsung should take a lot of the credit for the growth in the Android Market. Its Galaxy S III truly competes with Apple, and Samsung has the numbers to prove it. Out of all the smartphones shipped last quarter, 44 percent where Samsung ones. IDC also reported that when it combined seven other Android vendors, that total did not come close to Samsung’s number.

Concluding Thoughts

Apple and Samsung will go back and forth in this battle, especially when the new iPhone comes out in September. The current legal battle over patents may also help determine which company prevails.
